Cilia- and flagella-associated protein 68 (CFAP68)

CFAP68
Molecular classification
Other (Microtubule inner protein; structural axonemal protein)
01

Overview

CFAP68 is a microtubule inner protein (MIP) that localizes to the seam of microtubule doublets within motile cilia and flagella, where it contributes to the structural integrity and organization of the axoneme[3][2]. In human cells, its localization is at the distal region of motile cilia, and it is essential for proper microtubule architecture, affecting the mechanical properties and regulation of ciliary and flagellar beating[2]. It is highly conserved in ciliated organisms and is critical for the correct motility and assembly of sperm flagella and other motile cilia[5][2]. If structural or functional defects arise in CFAP68, they may impact sperm motility and possibly contribute to ciliopathies, but it is not an established biomarker, drug target, or therapeutic receptor based on current evidence[5][1].
