Overview

Cilia and flagella associated protein 97 (CFAP97) is a poorly characterized, evolutionarily conserved, protein-coding gene that plays a structural role in the axoneme of motile cilia and flagella, particularly in the maintenance of their ultra-structure. Human CFAP97 is orthologous to Chlamydomonas FAP97 and is expressed in various tissues, with particular roles identified in the sperm flagellum where it helps maintain motility and structural integrity required for male fertility. Mutations in CFAP97 and its family members have been implicated in certain ciliopathies, male subfertility/infertility stemming from flagellar defects, as well as some hereditary neuropathies and cardiomyopathies, though its direct disease roles remain under investigation. No small molecule drugs or targeted therapeutics are currently known to interact directly with CFAP97.
