Overview

The **ciliary body** is a ring-like structure in the anterior segment of the eye, located between the iris and the choroid. It consists of three main components: the ciliary muscle, which controls lens accommodation for focusing; the ciliary processes, which secrete the aqueous humor that maintains intraocular pressure and nourishes avascular tissues; and the ciliary epithelia, a bilayer of pigmented and non-pigmented cells involved in fluid and metabolic exchange. Dysfunction or pathology of the ciliary body is involved in diseases such as glaucoma, and therapies for elevated intraocular pressure may target ciliary body function—typically by reducing aqueous humor production or destroying part of the ciliary epithelium. However, it is not a drug target in the sense of being a single molecular entity such as a receptor or enzyme.
