The ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor (CNTFR) complex is a multi-subunit receptor system that mediates the biological effects of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), a cytokine with potent neuroprotective and survival-promoting activities. The functional receptor complex consists of CNTFR alpha subunit (CNTFRα), leukemia inhibitory factor receptor beta subunit (LIFRβ), and glycoprotein 130 (gp130). Upon ligand binding, the complex activates JAK/STAT, MAPK, and PI3K pathways, regulating diverse cellular processes. It is expressed in neural tissue and other tissues, indicating broader physiological roles beyond neural maintenance.
