Overview

The "circulating blood pool" refers to the portion of total blood volume that is actively moving within the cardiovascular system at a given moment. It encompasses both arterial and venous blood, excluding blood that is marginated (e.g., adherent to vessel walls), pooled (as in veins during chronic venous insufficiency), or sequestered (e.g., in organs during certain physiological or pathological states). In medical imaging, such as cardiac blood pool scans (MUGA, first-pass scans), the term specifically denotes the blood visualized moving through the cardiac chambers and great vessels. The circulating blood pool is essential for the transport of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste throughout the body. It is not a molecule, receptor, or direct therapeutic target, and does not have a canonical gene, protein, or structural classification.
