Overview

The circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is the most abundant surface protein on Plasmodium vivax sporozoites, the infectious form of the malaria parasite transmitted by mosquitoes. CSP is essential for parasite development, migration within the mosquito vector, and invasion of human hepatocytes during infection. It is a major target for neutralizing antibodies and a key vaccine candidate. Significant heterogeneity in its central repeat sequences among different isolates poses challenges for universal vaccine efficacy.
