Target intelligence / Profile preview
Citrate synthase is a key mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the first step of the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle), which is central to cellular energy production. It facilitates the condensation of acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate to form citrate. Mitochondrial citrate can be transported into cytosol where it serves as precursor for fatty acid synthesis or regulates other pathways. Citrate synthase activity is frequently measured as an indicator of mitochondrial density/function.
