Overview

Clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) is a fundamental and highly conserved cellular process in eukaryotes responsible for the internalization of various cargo molecules—including transmembrane receptors, transporters, and nutrients—from the plasma membrane into the cell. This process involves the formation of clathrin-coated vesicles (CCVs), which are small membrane-bound structures enveloped by a protein coat primarily composed of clathrin. The CME machinery operates through several coordinated steps: Initiation, Coat Assembly, Maturation, Scission, and Uncoating. Key components include Clathrin, AP2 Complex, Accessory Proteins (Epsin, CALM/AP180, Eps15), Dynamin, and Hsc70 & Auxilin.
