Claudin 6 pseudogene (ENSG00000223503) is a nonfunctional DNA sequence in the human genome that resembles the coding gene for Claudin 6 (CLDN6), a tight junction protein, but does not encode a functional protein product[2][1]. Pseudogenes are considered "junk DNA" and are usually formed by gene duplication or retrotransposition events, resulting in sequences that have lost their original gene function[1][4]. This locus shares sequence similarity with Claudin 6 but does not have regulatory regions or an intact coding frame necessary for protein expression[1][2]. Most pseudogenes are not involved in therapeutic targeting, clinical biomarker use, or drug interactions[1][2]. No evidence has been identified indicating functional expression, disease association, or relevance as a therapeutic drug target. Caution is advised not to confuse the pseudogene with the functional Claudin 6 gene (CLDN6), which does encode a protein[2].
