Claudin 9 (CLDN9) is an integral membrane protein and a member of the claudin family, a key component of tight junctions in epithelial and endothelial cells. It plays a role in maintaining cell polarity and regulating signal transduction. In the inner ear, it acts as a cation barrier, essential for hearing. It's also implicated in viral entry (Hepatitis C) and bacterial toxin binding, and is overexpressed in several cancers, making it a potential therapeutic target.
