Overview

Cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor subunit 7 (CPSF7) is a protein-coding member of the cleavage factor Im (CFIm) complex, which is essential for pre-mRNA 3'-end cleavage and polyadenylation processing in eukaryotic cells. This processing is necessary for the maturation of messenger RNA (mRNA) and, consequently, for correct gene expression. CPSF7 corresponds to the 59 kDa subunit (CFIm59) of this multiprotein complex and binds to specific RNA sequence signals in the 3'-untranslated region of pre-mRNAs. The CFIm complex regulates alternative polyadenylation events, influencing mRNA stability, localization, and translation—thus playing a significant role in cellular homeostasis and pathology. CPSF7 is upregulated in several cancers, including lung adenocarcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma, where its overexpression promotes cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, partly via activation of the AKT/mTOR pathway. Targeting CPSF7 or modulating its function is of therapeutic interest but is complicated by its critical role in core RNA processing functions.
