Clinical immune system

The immune system is a complex, integrated network of cells, tissues, and signaling molecules designed to maintain physiological homeostasis by identifying and neutralizing foreign pathogens and aberrant host cells (NIH, 2023). It is functionally divided into the innate system, providing rapid but non-specific responses, and the adaptive system, which generates antigen-specific memory via B and T lymphocytes (StatPearls, 2023). While the 'clinical immune system' is not a discrete therapeutic target, it serves as the broader biological context for numerous drug classes, including monoclonal antibodies, checkpoint inhibitors, and immunosuppressants (PubMed, 2022). Pharmacological intervention typically focuses on specific nodes within this system, such as cytokines (e.g., TNF-alpha) or cell-surface receptors (e.g., PD-1), to address pathologies like autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, and oncology. However, systemic modulation of immune activity presents significant clinical challenges, including the risk of severe immunosuppression, opportunistic infections, and immune-related adverse events like cytokine release syndrome (Wikipedia, 2024).
