Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile)

Target
C. difficile
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Gram-positive bacterium, Obligate anaerobe
01

Overview

Clostridioides difficile is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, obligate anaerobic bacterium that is a major cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis in humans. It produces toxins TcdA and TcdB, which disrupt host cell signaling and cause inflammation and cell death in the colon. Spores allow for environmental persistence and transmission, and antibiotic resistance is a growing concern.
