Clostridioides difficile Binary Toxin (CDT)

Target
CDT
Molecular classification
Exotoxin, AB toxin, ADP-ribosyltransferase
01

Overview

Clostridioides difficile binary toxin is an AB-type exotoxin composed of an enzymatic subunit (CDTa, ADP-ribosyltransferase) that disrupts actin dynamics after being delivered into host cells by a specialized pore-forming subunit (CDTb). Its presence correlates strongly with more severe clinical outcomes in CDI due to its ability to enhance bacterial colonization through cytoskeletal disruption and increased epithelial adherence.

02

Mechanism of action

Neutralizing antibodies targeting CDTb block oligomerization and pore formation, inhibiting CDTa entry and subsequent actin ADP-ribosylation.
