Clostridium is a large genus of obligate anaerobic, Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes[1][2][3][4]. Clostridium species inhabit soil, the intestines of animals and humans, and include both pathogenic and non-pathogenic variants. Some species are medically significant due to their ability to produce potent toxins which cause diseases such as botulism (C. botulinum), tetanus (C. tetani), gas gangrene (C. perfringens), and antibiotic-associated diarrhea (formerly Clostridium difficile, now Clostridioides difficile)[1][2][5]. The group is taxonomically diverse; the genus has been subject to multiple taxonomic revisions, and many former members have been reclassified into new genera as molecular techniques have refined bacterial phylogeny[1][2].
