Overview

Clostridium butyricum strain TO-A is a specialized, non-pathogenic, Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium utilized as a probiotic agent to maintain and restore gastrointestinal health. As a spore-forming organism, it is naturally resistant to gastric acid and high temperatures, allowing it to reach the colon effectively where it produces significant quantities of butyrate. The TO-A strain is particularly notable for its metabolic capacity to utilize exogenous lactate and acetate to produce butyrate, thereby preventing lactate accumulation and providing a critical energy source for colonocytes. It is frequently administered in multi-strain probiotic formulations to treat conditions such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, and irritable bowel syndrome by strengthening the intestinal epithelial barrier and suppressing pro-inflammatory signaling. Recent clinical research also indicates that Clostridium butyricum TO-A can modulate the tumor microenvironment and enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors in colorectal cancer.
