Clostridium chauvoei antigen

Molecular classification
Bacterial protein, Bacterial toxin, Surface antigen, Flagellar protein

Overview

Clostridium chauvoei antigen refers to the immunogenic components of the Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium Clostridium chauvoei, which is the causative agent of blackleg in ruminants (PubMed: 25667241). The most prominent antigen is Clostridium chauvoei toxin A (CctA), a pore-forming leucocidin that serves as a primary virulence factor and a critical target for protective immunity (PubMed: 12874051). Other significant antigenic components include flagellar proteins (FliC) and sialidases (NanA), which contribute to bacterial motility and tissue invasion (PubMed: 21803318). These antigens are primarily targeted through the administration of veterinary vaccines, such as bacterin-toxoids, which induce the production of neutralizing antibodies (Merck Veterinary Manual). This immune response prevents the systemic spread of toxins and bacterial colonization, effectively controlling the rapid and fatal myonecrosis associated with the disease. Modern therapeutic strategies are increasingly focused on recombinant subunit vaccines that utilize purified or synthetic versions of these antigens to enhance safety and efficacy.
