Clostridium difficile Vegetative Cell Surface Layer Proteins (SLP)

Target
SLP
Molecular classification
Protein, Surface Layer Protein
01

Overview

Clostridium difficile vegetative cells are characterized by a prominent surface layer (S-layer), which is primarily composed of two major proteins: the high-molecular-weight S-layer protein (HMW-SLP) and the low-molecular-weight S-layer protein (LMW-SLP). These proteins are encoded by a single gene, slpA, and together form a heterodimeric lattice that covers the bacterial cell surface. They contribute to cell integrity, adhesion to host cells, immune modulation, and biofilm formation, playing essential roles in pathogenesis and making them potential targets for therapeutic interventions.
