Clostridium perfringens is a Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium widely found in soil, the environment, and the intestinal tracts of humans and animals[1][3][5]. It is pathogenic and known for causing a range of diseases, most notably food poisoning and gas gangrene. The bacterium can rapidly multiply and produces several potent exotoxins, with strains classified based on their toxin profiles (A–G types, depending on toxins produced)[5][6]. Major clinical syndromes include self-limiting gastroenteritis (from ingestion of contaminated food) and severe, potentially fatal soft tissue infections (gas gangrene) typically following traumatic wounds[3][7]. Although several drugs and investigational agents (phages, sialidase inhibitors) are considered against C. perfringens, the bacterium itself is not a “target” molecule in the sense of a receptor, enzyme, or protein relevant to direct therapeutic modulation; rather, it is a pathogenic organism. As such, it is not classified as a traditional pharmaceutical target but as a microbial pathogen responsible for clinically important infectious diseases[5][1].
