Overview

Clostridium perfringens antigens are a group of potent toxins and enzymes produced by the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium perfringens, which are central to its pathogenicity in humans and animals (StatPearls, 2023). These antigens include the alpha toxin (CPA), a zinc-dependent phospholipase C; the beta toxin (CPB), a pore-forming toxin; the epsilon toxin (ETX); and the enterotoxin (CPE), which is responsible for common food poisoning (Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews, 2004). These molecules function by disrupting host cell membranes, causing tissue necrosis, and inducing systemic inflammatory responses. In therapeutic contexts, these antigens are the primary targets for toxoid-based vaccines and passive immunization using antitoxins, which work by neutralizing the toxins before they can bind to or damage host cells (Journal of Applied Microbiology, 2005). Effective management of C. perfringens-mediated diseases often relies on the rapid neutralization of these antigens to prevent irreversible tissue damage and death.
