Overview

The Clostridium tetani toxin antigen, commonly known as tetanus toxin or TeNT, is a potent neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. This protein is responsible for the clinical manifestations of tetanus, a severe neurological disease characterized by spastic paralysis. It acts as a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that specifically cleaves synaptobrevin (VAMP2), a vesicle-associated membrane protein critical for neurotransmitter release. Vaccination with chemically inactivated toxoid induces robust protective immunity against tetanus.
