Clostridium tetani Toxin Protein (TeNT)

Target
TeNT
Molecular classification
Toxin, Enzyme, Endopeptidase
01

Overview

The Clostridium tetani toxin protein, or tetanus toxin (TeNT), is a potent neurotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani. It causes tetanus, characterized by spastic paralysis, by inhibiting neurotransmitter release in inhibitory interneurons. The toxin binds to neuronal receptors, undergoes retrograde axonal transport to the CNS, and the light chain cleaves synaptobrevin-2, disrupting neurotransmission.

Mechanism of action

The light chain (LC) cleaves synaptobrevin-2/SNARE proteins, blocking neurotransmitter release from inhibitory interneurons in the spinal cord, leading to muscle rigidity and spastic paralysis.
