Clostridium tetani toxoid antigen is an inactivated (toxoid) form of the neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The native toxin, known as tetanospasmin, is a potent neurotoxin responsible for the clinical manifestations of tetanus, including severe muscle spasms and rigidity. The toxoid is created by treating the toxin with formaldehyde to eliminate its toxicity while preserving its immunogenic properties. This allows it to safely stimulate an immune response when used as a vaccine component.
