Overview

Clotting time is a clinical measure of the length of time required for a blood sample to form a clot, reflecting the overall function of the coagulation cascade. It is used as a screening test to detect bleeding or clotting abnormalities and for monitoring patients on anticoagulation therapy. Abnormal clotting time can result from deficiencies or dysfunction of specific clotting factors, platelet disorders, medications, liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, or acute coagulopathies including disseminated intravascular coagulation. Specific laboratory assays (such as PT, aPTT, ACT, TT, and INR) provide more targeted measurements of the various clotting pathways.
