Clumping factor A (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Serine-aspartate repeat-containing protein (SDr) family, Surface adhesion protein
01

Overview

Clumping factor A (ClfA) is a cell surface-associated protein and a major virulence factor produced by Staphylococcus aureus. It binds to the gamma-chain of human fibrinogen, promoting bacterial adhesion to host tissues and medical devices, facilitating biofilm formation and infection persistence. It also inhibits phagocytosis by immune cells. ClfA is being investigated as a vaccine target.

Mechanism of action

Dock, lock, and latch (DLL) mechanism to bind fibrinogen γ-chain. Promotes bacterial adhesion under shear stress. Can inhibit phagocytosis through complement regulation.
