Clumping factor A (ClfA) is a cell surface-associated protein found in Staphylococcus aureus. It is a key virulence factor that plays a central role in the pathogenesis of S. aureus infections by mediating bacterial attachment to host tissues and promoting immune evasion. It binds to the gamma-chain of human fibrinogen, facilitating bacterial clumping and colonization. It also enables S. aureus to evade the host immune response, supporting persistent colonization and subsequently, infection. ClfA can also mediate direct binding to human platelets and binds to complement regulator I protein.
