The CD3 antigen is a multi-subunit protein complex and a critical T cell co-receptor, essential for the activation of both cytotoxic (CD8+) and helper (CD4+) T cells. It consists of gamma (γ), delta (δ), epsilon (ε), and zeta (ζ) chains and functions to transmit activation signals from antigen recognition by the variable αβ heterodimeric TCR to intracellular signaling pathways in the T cell. Therapeutic anti-CD3 antibodies can modulate immune responses, making it a target for cancer immunotherapy, transplantation tolerance induction, and treatment of autoimmune diseases.
