CD52 is a small, heavily glycosylated glycoprotein anchored to the cell surface via a GPI linkage. It is highly expressed on mature lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils, and spermatozoa. While its precise physiological function is not fully understood, it plays a role in immune regulation, antiadhesion, and complement inhibition. CD52 is a therapeutic target for monoclonal antibody therapies like alemtuzumab, which is used to treat certain leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple sclerosis by inducing immune suppression through the depletion of CD52-expressing cells.
Alemtuzumab binds to CD52, leading to complement-mediated lysis and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity of CD52-expressing cells.
