CD79a (Igα) is a transmembrane protein essential for B cell development and function. It forms a heterodimer with CD79b (Igβ) to create the functional B-cell receptor (BCR) complex. Upon antigen binding, CD79a initiates downstream signaling cascades through its ITAM motifs. Mutations in CD79A cause agammaglobulinemia. Aberrant expression is associated with some B-cell malignancies, making it a potential therapeutic target.
Targeting CD79a for therapeutic intervention in B-cell malignancies may involve blocking BCR signaling, inducing antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC), or promoting apoptosis of malignant B cells. Specific mechanisms depend on the therapeutic agent used.
