The cluster of differentiation 8 beta chain (CD8β) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that forms part of the CD8 co-receptor complex, which is essential for T cell-mediated immune responses. The CD8 molecule typically exists as either a heterodimer composed of one alpha (CD8α) and one beta (CD8β) chain or as a homodimer of two alpha chains. It plays an essential role in thymic selection during T cell development ensuring proper maturation into functional CTLs capable of recognizing self-MHC class I molecules presenting foreign peptides.
Antibodies against CD8 are used for depletion or modulation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes.
