Overview
CD4 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that functions as a co-receptor for the T-cell receptor (TCR) on helper T cells. It binds to MHC class II molecules on antigen-presenting cells (APCs), enhancing TCR signaling and facilitating the formation of immunological synapses. CD4 plays a crucial role in directing naive CD4+ T cell differentiation and is the primary receptor for HIV entry into host cells.
