Overview

CMC1 pseudogene 3 (abbreviated CMC1P3) is a nonfunctional segment of DNA closely resembling the protein-coding gene CMC1, which encodes a mitochondrial protein involved in the assembly of cytochrome c oxidase, part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. As a pseudogene, CMC1P3 does not produce a functional protein and is generally considered noncoding. Pseudogenes may, in some cases, regulate their parent genes at the RNA level through competition for microRNAs or by generating regulatory RNAs, but these functions are not established for CMC1P3 specifically. Pseudogenes as a class can play roles in gene regulation through RNA interference or as competitive endogenous RNAs, though for most individual pseudogenes, such as CMC1P3, specific functions are not demonstrated. CMC1P3 is not considered a validated therapeutic target, nor is it associated with any known drugs or considered in clinical biomarker panels. There is no evidence CMC1 pseudogene 3 encodes a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other functional molecule relevant for direct therapeutic targeting. It should not be confused with the protein-coding CMC1 gene.
