Overview

CMV pp65 antigen-specific cytotoxic T cells are adaptive immune cells (primarily CD8+ T cells, though CD4+ specificity exists[1]) capable of identifying and killing CMV-infected cells presenting pp65-derived peptides on HLA class I molecules[3][2]. These T cells drive polyfunctional cytotoxic immune responses characterized by the production of interferon-γ, TNF-α, perforin, and mobilization of CD107a upon activation[1][2]. They are essential for CMV control in healthy and immunocompromised individuals, and their adoptive transfer is used therapeutically in contexts such as stem cell transplantation to restore antiviral immunity[4]. Monitoring the presence and function of pp65-specific CTL is a biomarker for CMV-specific immunity in clinical settings[3][2]. The term refers to a cell population, not a molecular drug target, and should not be confused with an individual molecule, receptor, or protein.
