Target intelligence / Profile preview

cMyc oncogene (MYC)

Target
MYC
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, bHLH-LZ transcription factor
01

Overview

The cMyc oncogene (MYC) is a proto-oncogene encoding a nuclear phosphoprotein that functions as a transcription factor. It regulates cell cycle progression, cellular growth, metabolism, apoptosis, differentiation, self-renewal, and protein synthesis. Overexpression of MYC is implicated in a majority of human cancers, making it a significant therapeutic target. However, its structure poses challenges for drug development.

02

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of mRNA expression/translation, disruption of dimerization with Max, induction of premature degradation, blocking DNA binding activity

Safety considerations

Essential for embryonic development - knockout is embryonic lethalRequired for mature cell survival/growth/differentiation in adultsLack of defined pockets for small molecule binding making it difficult to target with conventional drugs
