CNTNAP2 antisense RNA 1 (CNTNAP2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene situated at chromosome 7 (location 7q35) and transcribed antisense to CNTNAP2, a neuronal cell adhesion molecule implicated in epilepsy, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and other neurological disorders. As a non-coding RNA, CNTNAP2-AS1 does not encode a protein but likely functions in the regulation of gene expression through epigenetic and post-transcriptional mechanisms, particularly influencing the expression of CNTNAP2. There is evidence that antisense RNAs, including those at autism susceptibility loci, have region- and tissue-specific functions in the brain, supporting a possible role in neurodevelopmental processes. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms and physiological roles of CNTNAP2-AS1 are as yet incompletely characterized, and it is not considered a direct therapeutic target by current definitions.
Not established for drug action. Antisense oligonucleotide therapeutics theoretically could target lncRNAs for degradation or functional modulation.
