Overview

Co-formulated steroids and antibiotics refer to pharmaceutical products in which a corticosteroid (such as dexamethasone, triamcinolone acetonide, or betamethasone) is combined with an antibiotic (such as tobramycin, neomycin, or moxifloxacin). These products are designed to provide simultaneous control of inflammation (via the steroid) and treatment or prophylaxis of bacterial infection (via the antibiotic). They are most commonly used in ophthalmology (as eye drops or ointments for postoperative prophylaxis and treatment of ocular infections with inflammation), dermatology (for mixed infective-inflammatory dermatoses), and sometimes in otology (for bacterial ear infections with inflammation). While they can improve outcomes in appropriate scenarios, their use requires caution to avoid masking non-bacterial infections (particularly viral), minimizing side effects associated with steroids, and monitoring for secondary infection or delayed healing. They are not single pharmacological targets but rather combination formulations leveraging the complementary actions of two drug classes within one product.

Mechanism of action
