Coagulase (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Hydrolase
01

Overview

Coagulase is an enzyme produced by Staphylococcus aureus that converts fibrinogen in plasma to fibrin. This process leads to the formation of a fibrin clot around the bacterial cells, protecting them from phagocytosis and other host defenses. Coagulase production is a key virulence factor and diagnostic marker for S. aureus.

02

Mechanism of action

Coagulase converts fibrinogen to fibrin, leading to the formation of a fibrin clot. Inhibitors of coagulase prevent this conversion, thereby disrupting bacterial immune evasion and biofilm formation.
