Overview

Coagulation Factor X, also known as Stuart-Prower factor, is a vitamin K-dependent serine protease that plays a central role in the human blood coagulation system [1.2.1, 1.2.3]. It is synthesized in the liver as an inactive zymogen and is activated to Factor Xa by either the intrinsic or extrinsic pathways at the point where they converge into the common pathway [1.2.1, 1.4.2]. Factor Xa is the primary enzymatic component of the prothrombinase complex, which catalyzes the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, the final step required for fibrin clot formation [1.2.1, 1.4.1]. Because it sits at a critical bottleneck in the coagulation cascade, Factor Xa is a major therapeutic target for preventing and treating thrombotic disorders [1.2.3, 1.3.5]. Drugs such as betrixaban are direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) that specifically and reversibly inhibit Factor Xa, thereby reducing thrombin generation and the risk of conditions like deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism [1.1.2, 1.3.2]. This target is also involved in non-hemostatic processes such as inflammation and wound healing through the activation of protease-activated receptors (PARs) [1.2.1, 1.2.3].
