Coagulation factor XI messenger RNA (F11 mRNA) is the transcript produced from the F11 gene, which encodes coagulation factor XI (FXI), a key protein in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. FXI plays an essential role in blood clotting by activating factor IX after its own activation, leading to downstream activation of factors that ultimately generate thrombin and fibrin clots. Because FXI plays a more prominent role in pathological thrombosis than physiological hemostasis, it is considered an attractive target for anticoagulant therapies aiming to reduce thrombotic risk with minimal impact on normal bleeding control.
Antisense oligonucleotide therapies could target F11 mRNA to reduce FXI protein levels.
