Overview
COPZ1 encodes a subunit of the cytoplasmic coatomer protein complex (COPI), essential for autophagy and intracellular protein trafficking. The coatomer mediates biosynthetic protein transport from the ER, through the Golgi apparatus up to the trans-Golgi network and is required for budding from Golgi membranes and retrograde Golgi-to-ER transport of dilysine-tagged proteins. The zeta subunit may regulate coat assembly and thus influence the rate of biosynthetic protein transport.
