Overview

Coatomer subunit gamma-2 (COPG2) is a structural component of the coatomer protein complex (COPI), which is essential for vesicle formation involved in the retrograde transport of proteins from the Golgi apparatus back to the endoplasmic reticulum and between Golgi compartments. COPG2, as part of the nonclathrin-coated vesicles, mediates key processes in intracellular trafficking, maintenance of Golgi structure, and sorting of cargo proteins within cells. It interacts with scaffolding and regulatory proteins to help assemble coatomer complexes, influencing Golgi architecture and potentially contributing to specialized cellular functions. Alterations in COPG2 expression or function have been implicated in various cancers and neurodevelopmental disorders, highlighting its potential importance in human pathophysiology, though it is not a direct drug target at present.
