Cocaine esterase (CocE)

Target
CocE
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Hydrolase, Carboxylesterase
01

Overview

Cocaine esterase (CocE) is a bacterial enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of cocaine into ecgonine methyl ester and benzoic acid. It is recognized as the most efficient natural catalyst for cocaine degradation discovered to date. The enzyme was originally identified in soil bacteria, such as *Rhodococcus* sp. strain MB1, which can use cocaine as their sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Engineered forms, like TNX-1300, are being developed for the treatment of acute cocaine intoxication.
