Overview

Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble quinone compound found throughout the body—especially in mitochondria—where it plays an essential role as an electron carrier in the mitochondrial respiratory chain for ATP production. It also functions as an important antioxidant both independently and by regenerating vitamin E from its oxidized form. The highest concentrations are found in organs with high energy demands such as the heart, liver, and kidneys. Endogenous synthesis declines with age and certain diseases; dietary sources include organ meats and some plant oils but are generally insufficient to correct deficiencies caused by genetic defects or secondary depletion from medications like statins. Although widely marketed as a dietary supplement for cardiovascular health and other indications related to oxidative stress or energy metabolism disorders—including heart failure and neurodegenerative diseases—Coenzyme Q10 is not considered a therapeutic target such as an enzyme or receptor but rather acts systemically when supplemented exogenously.

Mechanism of action

As a supplement, CoQ10 acts by replenishing cellular levels to support mitochondrial ATP production and antioxidant defenses. It does not act via receptor binding or enzyme inhibition typical of drug targets.
