Overview

A coextractant is not a biological molecule or therapeutic target; instead, it is a chemical reagent or solvent used in separation science and analytical chemistry to enhance the extraction of target solutes from complex matrices. In pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications, coextractants—such as ethanol, cyclohexanone, or specific ligands—are employed during the purification of bioactive compounds from natural sources or the preparation of biological samples for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). They function by modifying the polarity of the extraction solvent or by forming synergistic complexes with the target analyte to improve its solubility and recovery. In analytical contexts, the term may also refer to 'coextractant interferents,' which are endogenous matrix components (like lipids or proteins) that are inadvertently extracted alongside the analyte, potentially leading to signal suppression or enhancement in diagnostic assays. Because it is a process-related chemical term rather than a biological entity, it does not possess endogenous functions or a role in disease pathophysiology.
