Cognitive function

01

Overview

Cognitive function encompasses multiple interrelated mental abilities, including memory, attention, problem-solving, language, and executive skills. These functions are emergent properties of neural and synaptic network activity and are modulated by numerous molecular pathways, such as dopaminergic signaling, synaptic plasticity, neurotrophic factors like BDNF, and inflammation. Cognitive decline or impairment is associated with various pathological states such as neurodegenerative diseases. However, 'cognitive function' itself is not a discrete molecule, receptor, enzyme, or other molecular entity, and thus cannot serve as a direct therapeutic target or receptor[3][4][5]. The literature on cognitive function routinely discusses it as a physiological or behavioral property—not a single molecule nor a canonical biological target[4][5]. Multiple proteins, receptors, enzymes, and genetic polymorphisms (such as dopamine receptors, COMT, BDNF) influence cognitive function, but cognitive function itself does not represent any single such entity[5]. Studies that map molecular determinants and biomarkers for cognitive function do so by examining large-scale proteomics, genomics, or signaling pathways, rather than isolating a single target named “cognitive function”[1][4]. If you need information on specific molecular targets involved in cognitive function (such as NMDA receptor, BDNF, dopamine receptors, etc.), please specify the molecule or pathway of interest.
