The mechanism of action for cognitive function enhancers is highly heterogeneous and depends on the specific drug class; it typically involves increasing the concentration of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, dopamine, or glutamate, modulating ionotropic receptors (e.g., NMDA or AMPA receptors) to facilitate long-term potentiation, or improving cerebral metabolic activity (StatPearls, 2023; PubMed, 2020).
