“Cognitive function pathways” is a catchall term referring to the diverse molecular, cellular, and circuit mechanisms that underlie cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and executive processing. Cognitive functions are governed by coordinated activity across multiple brain regions (e.g., prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, cerebrum) and involve many neurotransmitter systems (such as dopamine, glutamate, acetylcholine)[4][8][10]. Molecular studies identify pathways such as synaptic transmission, dopamine receptor signaling, lipid biosynthesis, immune response (e.g., interleukin signaling), epigenetic mechanisms, oxidative stress, neuronal metabolism, and neurotrophic support (e.g., BDNF pathway) as contributors to cognitive performance and resilience[1][2][5][7][10]. Dysregulation in any one of these pathways can contribute to disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD, and other neurodegenerative or psychiatric diseases[3][10]. Owing to this complexity and lack of a single molecular entity, “Cognitive function pathways” should not be defined as an individual therapeutic target.
