Overview

Coiled-coil domain-containing 26 long non-coding RNA (CCDC26) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) found in the chromosomal region 8q24.21 that does not encode a functional protein but plays regulatory roles at the RNA level[3]. It is highly expressed in certain myeloid leukemia cell lines and is primarily located in the nucleus[3]. CCDC26 regulates the expression of the receptor tyrosine kinase KIT, an oncogene implicated in acute myeloid leukemia; knockdown of CCDC26 increases KIT expression and affects leukemia cell growth and survival, particularly under stress, with implications for the effectiveness of KIT-specific inhibitors[1][3]. Aberrations in CCDC26 (such as amplifications or gene fusions) are associated with cancer, including acute myeloid leukemia and low-grade glioma, and CCDC26 locus polymorphisms (such as rs4295627) are linked to glioma risk[4]. There is no known translated CCDC26 protein. The lncRNA’s function likely centers on the regulation of gene expression essential to cell proliferation and differentiation, and its alteration contributes to cancer pathogenesis[3][1].
