CCDC124 is a highly conserved, intrinsically disordered protein found in eukaryotes, from fungi to humans[1][4]. It primarily localizes to the cytoplasm and associates with large ribosomal subunits, playing a key role in mediating reversible ribosomal hibernation during cellular stress such as nutrient deprivation. Upon relief from stress, CCDC124 facilitates quick resumption of translation by interacting with tRNA and rRNA binding sites and modulating the accessibility of the ribosome’s functional centers[2][3][5]. Beyond ribosomal regulation, CCDC124 is an essential component of the centrosome and midbody, critical for proper cytokinesis; its depletion results in abnormal cell division and multinucleation[4]. Although not currently targeted by therapeutics, its fundamental role in cell cycle and stress adaptation makes it an important subject for basic cell biology research.
