Coiled-coil domain-containing protein 137 (CCDC137) is a nuclear RNA-binding protein implicated in the regulation of tumor proliferation and cell cycle progression, particularly through mRNA localization and activation of the AKT signaling pathway. CCDC137 is upregulated in multiple human cancers and correlates with poor clinical outcomes, especially in hepatocellular carcinoma; it modulates the cytoplasmic localization of key oncogenic mRNAs (such as FOXM1, LASP1, JTV1, FLOT2), which enhances their protein expression and activates proliferative AKT signaling. CCDC137 has also been identified as a Vpr target in HIV research, involved in DNA damage response, and is enriched in gene sets related to mitotic cell cycle and G1/S transition. Its elevated expression and function in cell cycle processes make it a potential therapeutic target and prognostic cancer biomarker.
